BECOMING
I cut out fragments of skin, hair and textiles from current photo spreads of international fashion magazines such as Quest, Hunger and Self Service and layer them into relief collages. Centred on a white surface, I photograph them with shadows, which intensifies the impression of physical presence. The resulting series of 8 motifs is supplemented by a single image showing a surface of mounted and layered fragments, which appear randomly placed in their abundance.
In Becoming I am addressing the generation of fantasy and desire. I examine the connections between reduction and abundance and pursue the question of how new sensual physicality can be developed through the dismantling and disembodiment of the motifs of the source material using techniques of abstraction and condensation. Conceptually, with this project of deconstruction and redefinition, I connect to queer feminist practices of appropriation and reinterpretation.
9 images, each 60 x 50 cm, fine art inkjet prints in object frames
2016 – 2021
