HEARTS OF DARKNESS
Two people are visible, each entwined in physical interaction, emerging from the darkness and illuminated by flashlight. The focus of the photographs of these staged moments is on the gestures of the hands, the hair and the drapery of the textiles. The chosen framing, the hidden faces and the unisex style of clothing obscure the genders of the portrayed persons. In this work, I examine the act of wrestling as a field of tension between being with and against each other, between combative moments and instants of sensual touch. Formally, I make references to the chiaroscuro paintings of Caravaggio.
