STRANGER
This series shows sections of store interiors in Cairo. Neon lights are the brightest areas in the picture, while the rest of the photographed space sinks schematically into darkness. Only after a longer look do hints of layering become visible.
In Stranger I investigate the question of what we see when we encounter the unknown. In a „foreign“ environment, ready-made images quickly come to mind. Just as the eyes first have to get used to the dark and it takes time to perceive our surroundings, this work is about sounding out the boundary between assuming and understanding. To counteract a fixation of the gaze, the seven photographs are shown hanging freely in a row with nails at the upper corners.
8 images, 50 x 37,5 cm
2007 – 2010
